Florida Governor Ron DeSantis aids President Trump’s 2024 campaign?
Florida’s Governor, Ron DeSantis, has stepped forward to hold the Big Tech media platforms to account for their censorship of political candidates during elections. Could this help a Trump election run in 2024?
Governor DeSantis is putting forward legislation to hold the social media companies to account for candidates running for office. This includes all candidates having equal access to social media, that they do not suffer ‘shadow banning’, and fines, for deplatforming or political bias by the platform providers, especially during the run-up to elections.

President Trump found a close ally in Ron DeSantis during his time in office, Trump supported DeSantis in his 2018 run for office. Trump is now a resident of Florida after moving his main residency from New York City. The ex-President was banned off social media platforms after he called for ‘peaceful protest’ in Washington DC on January 6th. That the proposed legislation comes one month after this ban may not be a coincidence.
President Trump has been very quiet since leaving office, but many close to him have stated he intends to run for election in 2024. Due to the public disagreement with his former VP, Mike Pence, Trump will be looking for a new running mate. Could Ron DeSantis fill that role?
Experience
A lawyer by profession, DeSantis was a commissioned officer in the US Navy utilising his legal skills in Iraq during military operations conducted by Navy SEALS. This service continues today as he serves in the US Navy Reserve. He served as a federal prosecutor, with a particular interest in targeting child predators, something President Trump also put a high priority on while in office.
Governor DeSantis went on to represent Florida’s Sixth District in 2012, foregoing his Congressional pension and health plan, fighting for term limits and fighting for legislation that targeted sexual assault and harassment. He is a family man with two young children. Many would describe him as ‘one of the good guys’ in politics.
The Trump connection
How does this link to President Trump? The legislation that DeSantis has proposed will likely be passed, paving the way for Floridian resident Donald J. Trump to access social media for his campaign run. It will be difficult for the social media platforms to argue that they want to disbar certain political candidates from accessing what many regard as the ‘new town square’, especially during an election.
Governor DeSantis is clearly ambitious; could the next step for him be a VP role in a Trump 2024 election run and a subsequent run for President in 2028? He has the attributes required, the connections and has growing support among the wider US population. With President Trump alongside him he could easily fit into the role of a future US President.
Trump needs someone who is recognisable, has similar values, loves the US and is a great orator that can handle a hostile media. Ron DeSantis fits the bill.
